City Barbers has been a cornerstone of Chelmsford since 1975, epitomising both the enduring spirit of the community and the art of barbering. The original venture was birthed from the vision of Geoff Barnard and his brother Doug. They strategically chose Upper Bridge Road, close to the iconic Chelmsford City F.C. football ground, as their locale. This prime position made City Barbers the preferred choice for many, not least among them illustrious footballers such as Ron Smillie, Tony Nicholas, and Chelmsford City’s top goal scorer, Tony Butcher.

For over three decades, City Barbers flourished as a symbol of trust and unparalleled service. Its legacy was enriched by a roster of devoted regulars, drawn both by the impeccable service and the warm camaraderie the establishment fostered. However, the winds of change blew in 2011. After a commendable 46 years in the barbering profession, Geoff chose to retire, marking a poignant end to the original City Barbers chapter.

Yet, every ending is a new beginning. Enter Sharon Harper, a luminary in the barbering realm with an impressive 26 years under her belt. As a cherished member of the original City Barbers ensemble and with stints at revered establishments such as Empire Broomfield Road and Esquire Billericay, Sharon’s path led her full circle back to City Barbers before a subsequent tenure at Esquire. Her deep-rooted connection to the barbershop, fortified by her close bond with Geoff and his wife Marion, ignited a passion to rejuvenate the legacy of City Barbers.

When the ideal locale materialised on the lively Havengore Parade in Springfield, Sharon seized the moment. With Geoff’s endorsement, she resurrected the illustrious ‘City Barbers’ moniker, intertwining the rich tapestry of the original barbershop with her own vibrant aspirations for its future.

In June 2024, City Barbers embarked on a new chapter, moving to a bespoke home-based salon in Wallasea Gardens, Springfield, Chelmsford. This new location offers a more intimate and personalised experience, maintaining our unwavering commitment to excellence and our cherished legacy.
